Welcome to the Department of Métis Rights & Justice at Métis Nation–Saskatchewan. The Department of Métis Rights & Justice is responsible for advancing and protecting Métis rights and addressing justice related matters that affect Métis citizens and communities across Saskatchewan.
The Department provides leadership on Métis Nation–Saskatchewan litigation and legal strategy, including land claims and court actions required to defend Métis rights and jurisdiction. It supports the recognition and protection of Métis harvesting, fishing, and gathering rights, working collaboratively with other Métis Nation–Saskatchewan ministries as well as external partners.

A core responsibility of the department is addressing the ongoing harms of colonialism. This includes leading and supporting work related to the legacy of the Sixties Scoop and residential schools, including Île à la Crosse, in partnership with survivors, families, and survivor led committees. The Department also works alongside families of murdered and missing Métis women, girls, Elders, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ persons, as well as governments and agencies, to advance accountability, healing, and justice.
Through collaboration with Métis citizens, leadership, governments, and external partners, the department provides legal support and representation to Métis Nation–Saskatchewan on matters related to governance, rights, and self government. This work contributes to long term strategies grounded in Métis values, lived experience, and collective priorities.
At the core of this work is a commitment to justice that recognizes Métis rights as living rights that are actively exercised, protected, and advanced through sustained effort in support of a self governing Métis Nation, today and for generations to come.
